The NMHH uses its radio spectrum measurements to help it in its decision-making process. Thus, the Authority is tasked with:
Radio monitoring
Surveying the parameters of spectrum use
Radio control
Verifying compliance with frequency assignments and radio licences
Radio detection
Locating the sources of radio transmissions of unknown origin, those with no valid licence or those causing harmful interference — commonly known as pirate radio — and other high-frequency signals
Radio interference monitoring
Investigating and eliminating broadcasting and other radiocommunications interference
Coverage measurements
Measuring the field strength and quality characteristics of radio stations
EMC measurements
Measuring the compatibility of radio stations and other devices emitting electromagnetic radiation
Device inspection
One of the NMHH’s priorities is the market supervision of radio equipment, so that only compliant, safe and non-harmful devices are placed on the market in Hungary. The NMHH monitors commercially available devices on the basis of its annual supervisory plan. This includes laboratory measurements, i.e. verification of the devices’ actual operating parameters.
More information on this topic is available on our Devices page.
Electromagnetic exposure (electrosmog)
The NMHH continuously monitors electromagnetic exposure from technical devices across the entire country. The tests compare radiation levels generated by mobile phone base stations, broadcasting transmitters and other radio equipment with the respective health limit thresholds.
These measurements are also intended to provide objective and accessible information, by displaying the test results to the public. If the NMHH detects that an exposure threshold has been exceeded, it communicates the measurement result to the government office responsible for radiation safety in the area concerned.
The NMHH cooperates with other international and national organisations to promote best practices, and provides technical guidance and measurement-backed information as needed regarding electrosmog concerns.
Our popular measurement programme provides free, authoritative measurement data on the electrosmog exposure of condominiums and single-family homes. In addition to manual instrumental testing, the Authority is also ready to install electrosmog measuring instruments, free of charge, in the property of programme participants, which will continuously read and record radiation levels. On average, the instruments deployed are used for continuous monitoring for one week per site.
Radio frequency interference report
Official procedure for investigating and, if necessary, taking regulatory action to eliminate any external interference with broadcasting. Reports can be submitted using the form below, by e-mail or by post. The request must include details of the device affected, the nature, date, frequency and location of the interference, and the contact details of the individual making the report.
Internet speed measurement
In 2015, the NMHH launched an independent service on szelessav.net to offer Hungarian internet users a metering system, independent of all providers, for inspecting the technical features of the internet services they use. The NMHH’s Broadband Metering System is much more than just an online speed testing site, although it does of course also feature online speed measuring software, and a rather precise one at that: it is a regulatory service that can help users choose the best fixed or mobile internet service for their needs.
In our Internet section, we present in detail the NMHH Broadband Metering System and the available measurement options.
