Institute for Media Studies

hu

The Institute for Media Studies (MTMI) is an independent research workshop, which supports the work of the Media Council and the NMHH, produces media analyses and conducts media-related research.[1]The MTMI is an autonomous organisational unit of the Authority, and its work is supervised by the Media Council.

The Institute carries out research in four key areas.

Media history

Its research in media history provides broad insight into the history of the media, both in time and subject matter, while giving a sharper focus on the period of state socialism and the regime change.

Media law

MTMI’s media law research highlights issues related to freedom of expression and freedom of the press in the media, as well as problems relevant to media regulation and public authority practice, such as the protection of minors.

Media and society

Social science research targets the role and impact of the media in society, with the aim of presenting new phenomena, and identifying and analysing challenges stemming from its operation.

Cross-border media

Media research in the Carpathian Basin seeks to explore and monitor the media relations, media market players and media consumption characteristics of Hungarian communities living beyond the borders — in Subcarpathia, Transylvania, Vojvodina and the Uplands.

Talent management

In addition to research, the Institute pays special attention to talent management, for example, it organises a professional workshop for tutoring young researchers, and runs an application programme linked to the National Scientific Students’ Associations Conference.

Dissemination of information

The results of the research conducted at the Institute are published in its own Media Science Library series, and are shared at conferences and workshops held with higher education institutions.
