The International Telecommunication Union is the specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for telecommunications, ensuring the coordination of the telecommunications sector at the global level. Its objectives, as set out in its Constitution, include extending the benefits of telecommunication technologies to all the world's inhabitants and promoting the use of telecommunication services to facilitate peaceful relations.

To achieve these goals, it ensures the international allocation of radio spectrum and, as the responsible organization, is responsible for the rational, fair, useful, efficient, and economical use of radio spectrum for radio services. It adopts recommendations and reports related to the field of radio communications and conducts studies (ITU-R). In order to promote global standardization in telecommunications, it coordinates the development of systems and technologies that form the new global information infrastructure (ITU-T). In addition, it supports developing countries and regions through technical cooperation and assistance (ITU-D).

The ITU was founded in 1865 by 20 European states and currently has 194 member states. Hungary was one of the first countries to join the ITU in 1866 and has been an active member of the organization ever since.

Between two plenary meetings, the ITU Council, which meets every four years, deals with policy issues related to telecommunications and ensures that the Association's activities, policy ideas, and long-term strategies are in line with today's dynamically evolving telecommunications environment and rapidly changing challenges.

NMHH experts are currently involved in a wide range of activities within the Council and various working groups in the ITU's radiocommunication and standardization sectors. In addition, they represent the professional position of the authority at all important regular ITU meetings, such as the Plenipotentiary Conference and the World Radiocommunication Conference.
