Universal Postal Union (UPU)
The Universal Postal Union is a globally significant forum for international postal cooperation and one of the largest and oldest specialized agencies of the United Nations, founded in 1874 by 22 countries, including Hungary, through an intergovernmental agreement. It currently has 192 member states, making it the primary platform for cooperation among players in the postal sector.
The UPU's goal is to ensure the organization and improvement of universal postal services and to promote the development of a comprehensive network of up-to-date postal services and products in this field. It also performs advisory, mediating, and liaison functions and provides technical assistance when necessary. In addition to establishing rules for international letter mail, the organization makes recommendations to increase the volume of letter and parcel mail and financial services and to improve the quality of services provided to consumers.
Throughout the UPU's more than 150 years of operation, Hungary has always played an important role in the decision-making processes at both of the organization's main decision-making levels:
- the Postal Operators Council,
- the Administrative Council
NMHH experts assist the work of the Administrative Council.
