The purpose of the International Telecommunications Satellite Organization was to ensure the implementation of Resolution 1721 (XVI) of the UN General Assembly, which called for the development of satellite communications on a global and non-discriminatory basis.

The organization was restructured in 1999, and member states can use ITSO to verify that INTELSAT LLC. with regard to the assets and operational activities previously belonging to the organization, and to ensure compliance with them through its powers. The International Telecommunications Satellite Organization was founded in 1964 by 11 states under the name INTERSAT, pursuant to Resolution 1721 (XVI) of the UN General Assembly.

Hungary joined the Organization on January 26, 1994, and the NMHH has been representing it in the Organization since 2014.

The Director General is assisted in his professional work by the Advisory Board and the Frequency Working Group, in which NMHH staff also participate.
