Research on Electronic Communications Services Users, 2023 – Household Experiences

Executive summary

The research was conducted on a household sample of 3003 individuals using personal interviews (CAPI). The sample represents Hungarian households based on the region of residence, type of settlement, household size and age composition, as well as the educational level of the head of the household.

87% of households have a device suitable for internet use. The proportion of desktop computers has gradually decreased in recent years. However, the proportion of portable PCs has significantly increased. Currently, 37% of households use tablets and 65% use laptops. The most significant growth has been observed in smart TVs, which can now be found in every second household in 2023. The most widespread devices are smartphones, present in 82% of households.

Despite good device availability, 16% of the population over the age of 14 does not use the internet.

The proportion of bundled subscriptions has somewhat decreased, thanks to the shrinking landline telephone market. Still, 63% of households use fixed services in bundled packages. The inclusion of mobile phones in bundles is becoming increasingly common.

Household telecommunications spending has significantly increased, reaching 20,930 HUF in 2023, a 12.5% rise compared to 2022. Mobile costs have grown the most rapidly, with the average gross monthly expenditure per subscriber household being 12,960 HUF (an 18% increase). The total monthly telecommunications expenditure of households is 84 billion HUF.

The subjective perception of prices has worsened for both mobile services and fixed internet services. Many people feel that prices have significantly increased in the past 12 months.

Telekom is present in two-thirds of households with at least one of its services and is the market leader in all examined telecommunications areas.

There is a growing number of mobile subscriptions that include unlimited calls in some direction; 89% of postpaid mobile subscriptions feature some form of unlimited service.

Three-quarters of households use fixed internet, and the same proportion also have small- screen mobile internet. An increasing number of households (64%) have both types of internet. Those with both types tend to use fixed internet for activities that generate large amounts of data or require high stability.

n every second household, the internet speed now exceeds 500 Mbit/sec.

Consumers perceive that providers deliver the bandwidth as stipulated in the contract. However, relatively few have actually verified the download speeds of their service.

The vast majority (88%) now own a flat-screen TV. Smart TVs are present in 45% of households, with an additional 2% using so-called "TV smarteners."

24% of households use some form of streaming movie service. The proportion of viewers using streaming services is growing dynamically; in 2021, it was only 14%.

Streaming has completely replaced traditional TV services in very few places (4%). 5% of households regularly watch the free broadcast of MindigTV.

43% of respondents do not even look at the bill received from the provider. Nearly half of those who do look at it find it easy to understand.

One-fifth of respondents have heard about applications or websites that help navigate through telecommunications packages. Approximately the same number (23%) are aware of the National Media and Communications Authority's assistance applications.
