”Balázsék” breaks the law once again
This time, the Media Council of the National Media and Infocommunications Authority (NMHH) found that one of the episodes of “Balázsék” violated the human dignity of older women. The Council also examined the legality of the publication of commercial communications.
The Media Council found that, in the “Balázsék” episode broadcast on Radio 1 on 9 December 2025, the presenters made fun of the health issues, difficulties and appearance of older people, particularly women, in a humiliating tone incompatible with the right to respect for human dignity. What they said may have given listeners the impression that older people are less valuable to society than others, and therefore open to ridicule. The offensive remarks were not countered by any of the presenters. The Council imposed a fine of HUF 2,300,000 on Radio Plus Kft. and HUF 150,000 on the media service provider’s executive officer for repeated violation and also ordered the media service provider to publish a statement on the occurrence of violation.
Furthermore, the Media Council found that between 1 November 2025 and 2 February 2026, Első Pesti Egyetemi Rádió (Budapest 97.0 MHz) violated its obligations to broadcast in accordance with the terms of its public contract and provide uninterrupted media services. Therefore, the Council warned the media service provider Media Universalis Foundation and required it to refrain from breaches going forward and ensure statutory compliance.
Following a citizen complaint, the Media Council launched an investigation into a Christmas advertisement run by a poultry farming and processing company through several media services, but found that it did not breach the provisions on classification or commercial communications.
A complainant reported a suspected case of surreptitious advertising in connection with a cycling race broadcast by Eurosport 2, a channel falling within French jurisdiction, on 1 February 2026 from 03:00 pm. and 4 February 2026 from 04:00 p.m., but the official investigation did not confirm that the provisions on commercial communications had been breached.
