The NMHH consults the Irish Media Authority
At its meeting on 24 March, the Media Council of the National Media and Infocommunications Authority (NMHH) took decisions in a number of procedures brought following citizen complaints. The NMHH consulted the Irish media authority in a case concerning the age rating of content published by an on-demand media service provider.
A citizen complaint about a programme of Rádió 1 that aired on Győr 103.1 MHz on 24 February 2026 raised the issue that the media service provider failed to air programmes or programme elements dealing with local public life and assisting local everyday life to the extent provided for in its public contract, as those aired as local programmes actually provide information of national relevance. A full official investigation carried out by the Media Council did not reveal any breach, so the Media Council did not bring proceedings against the media service provider.
Another complaint concerned the permanent media service Rádió 1 Sopron 94.1 MHz. The complainant objected to an advertisement that the radio aired on 12 February 2026 from 9.59 a.m. and also the fact that Pannon Sopron Kft., as media service provider, failed to comply with the regulations on airtime. The investigation did not reveal any breach of the obligations under the public contract or the legislation on the broadcasting of commercial communications.
Furthermore, the Council also investigated an episode of the programme “Bochkor” that aired on Retro Radio on 11 February 2026 from 6 a.m. with regard to the application of the legislation on respect for human dignity and the protection of minors, but did not find any breach. The Media Council also assessed the compliance of an episode of the programme “Balázsék” that aired on Rádió 1 on 27 January from 6 a.m. with classification provisions, but the official investigation revealed that the programme complied with the criteria applicable to age category III selected by the media service provider.
In terms of the protection of minors, the NMHH launched ex officio investigations into the programmes “Here We Are: Notes for Living on Planet Earth”, “WolfWalkers”, “Fountain of Youth”, “The Gorge” and “Echo Valley” available on the Apple TV+ on-demand media service; however, only “WolfWalkers” was found to be in breach of Hungarian media regulations. The media service provider made the programme available with a rating of “not recommended under six years of age”, but the film would have fallen into age category III (not recommended under twelve years of age) due to violent content. As the media service provider registered in Ireland does not fall within Hungarian jurisdiction, the NMHH notified the Irish media authority (CNAM) of the alleged breach and requested it to take the necessary measures.
