As one of the agenda items for its upcoming meeting under the presidency of Dr. Monika Karas, the Media Council will discuss Klubradio’s pending award of a Budapest-based frequency that is reserved for community media service providers.

The station currently holds a licence for a Budapest-based commercial frequency, which is valid for the next seven years. Under effective legislation, a single broadcaster is only permitted to operate one radio station within a given coverage area.

Correspondingly, having Klubrádió, the Media Council and the Office of the National Media and Infocommunications Authority work together to arrange an unhindered transition is a key condition to using the community frequency. The station ceasing its operations on Budapest 95.3 FM simultaneously to the transition – and thereby relinquishing its pertaining licence – is another important prerequisite.

Experts at the Office have already begun devising the framework for a smooth frequency changeover which, subject to a favourable decision by the Media Council, will enable Klubrádió to continue broadcasting as a community media service provider.
