Hungarian version of a German TV commercial promoting conscious internet use garners nearly 17 thousand views so far. The ad warns parents vividly that they should protect their children from harm in cyberspace just as they would do in real life. Wo ist Klaus? – Where is Klaus? is a public information film of which the National Media and Infocommunications Authority (NMHH) created a Hungarian version with the permission of klicksafe.de to call attention to 7+1 useful things to know about the internet.

With the Where is Klaus? commercial the NMHH aims to make parents aware of the risks the internet entails and the importance of avoiding them in an intriguing way. The commercial features a mother who lets a biker gang as well as a shooting robot into her son's home which she would definitely not do in real life. At the end of the story, the film directs responsible parents to the website gyermekbarat.nmhh.hu where they find a wealth of interesting and valuable information on how to protect their children on the internet or in front of the TV screen.

The film is disseminated through various channels: those interested can expect to see it during the advertising breaks of a number of TV stations or by clicking on the ads on video sharing sites, it pops up on the social sites of the Authority several times and the NMHH is also promoting the commercial in cooperation with news websites.

In connection with the internet awareness ad, the NMHH is also offering 7+1 good tips to help encourage safe internet use among young people.

1.   The Net won't hide you!

We may not even realise how many 'footprints' we leave behind on the internet. It is false to assume that if we act anonymously we will face no consequences since whatever we do on-line can easily be traced back and identified. Once written or uploaded, practically nothing can be removed, these posts will take on a life of their own beyond our control. So it is important to make children understand that they should only upload pictures and comments they would identify with also in public.

2.   Protect your personal data

It is unwise to reveal your personal data on social sites or during chatting as there are ill-intentioned people who can easily misuse this information. For example, if you make your address known people whom you would otherwise not welcome to your home can visit you. Children should also pay attention to the security settings on social sites.

3.   What makes a good password?

Creating a password is not a nuisance you should quickly get over with to be able to enjoy internet services. A password serves to grant users and only the users access to their emails, Facebook account or other profiles. It is important to create a password that is difficult to guess: you should not use your date of birth or the name of your dog. In any case, combine upper and lower case letters and also include numbers when creating a password.

4.   You don't have to put up with harassment, not even on the internet!

There are a growing number of accounts of children abusing each other on the internet or being harassed by strangers. They should be made aware that they do not have to put up with harassment on the internet and just like in the real world, they can ask for help. Remind them not to keep their bad feelings to themselves as if they share their problems with adults these situations can be resolved quickly and efficiently.

5.   Abusing others is uncool even on the internet

It is not only harassed children we should talk with but, in an attempt to prevent trouble, also those who might become abusers. Children often fail to see the weight of their actions, it can help a lot in making them understand the situation if we get them to put themselves in the other's shoes. Nobody likes to be mocked, insulted or criticised for their looks or any other characteristic, so this way it is easier for them to understand that bullying is uncool even on the internet. The same goes for passive bystanders: they should be encouraged to join hands to protect the abused and not remain silent spectators.

6.   Who is on the other side?

Chatting is exciting, many people have found their partner on the internet. Nevertheless, keep in mind that you may never know whether your on-line acquaintance is telling the truth or not. Chatrooms are especially convenient for deception. Make children in your acquaintanceship aware of the dangers of chatting, and if they want to meet someone they got to know on the internet at any cost, never let them go alone! It is best if they are accompanied by an adult, but a friend could also make a suitable companion.

7.   What is filtering software and where can it be downloaded?

There are ever more parents who think that having some control over their children's on-line activity is important. Filtering programmes can be helpful in this: they prevent children from coming across contents that are not meant for them. When talking with children about these programmes it should always be emphasised that they are used in their interest and not because of a lack of trust as they can accidentally click on sites which can later on frighten them.

+1 Where to go if there is trouble?

Obviously, every adult wants to prevent trouble. A free filtering programme can be downloaded at gyermekbarat.nmhh.hu which can help. However, you cannot keep children on-line company all the time, so it is best to get them acquainted with www.internethotline.hu where they can report any abuse they experience or any scary or harsh content they encounter on the internet. Furthermore, there are dozens of games and interesting information on the Internet Hotline site that can help them find their way on the Net.
