In December, 69.9 percent of subscribers used digital services

The flash report is based on data provided on a voluntary basis by Hungary’s ten largest broadcasters and covers approximately 91 percent of the subscription television services market. Close to 3.4 million of the approx. 4.1 million Hungarian households use subscription-based television service. The remaining close to 700,000 households watch digital terrestrial programming that is accessible via a rooftop or indoor antenna.

At the end of December 2014, the service providers featured in the flash report (Magyar Telekom Nyrt., Invitel Zrt., UPC Magyarország Kft., DIGI Kft., PR-TELEKOM Zrt., Tarr Kft., ViDaNet Zrt., PARISAT Kft., UPC DTH S.ŕ.r.l., Antenna Hungária Zrt.) registered a total of 3.095 million subscribers.

In December, 69.9 percent of subscribers of the service providers featured in the flash report used digital services.

Within the sector of digital subscriptions, the number of subscribers to cable television or IPTV rose from 1,130,000 to 1,145,000 in December. A total of 901,000 subscribers used wireless services (satellite service via dish) and another 117,000 used MinDig TV Extra service at the end of the month.

In December, the number of cable or IPTV subscribers increased from 36.7 percent to 37 percent, according to data provided by service providers featured in the flash report. The share of wireless subscriptions stood at 32.9 percent while that of analogue cable television subscriptions was 30.1 percent at the end of December.

Taking into account the overall estimated market all technologies, UPC is the market leader with 27 percent share, Telekom is second with 25.1 percent and DIGI is third with 23.3 percent in the month under review.

In terms of the analogue and digital cable service market, cable television and IPTV, the flash report covers close to 88 percent of the total number of subscriptions. In December, the number of cable subscriptions of the service providers featured in the report was 2.076 million, specifically the number of analogue subscriptions dropped from 937,000 to 931,000 compared to the previous month.

The top three service providers of the cable subscription market are UPC (26.9%), Telekom (23.1%) and DIGI (20.3%). The top three service providers in the wireless subscription market are DIGI (30.2%), Telekom (29.6%) and UPC (27%). As of late December, MinDig TV Extra had a market share of 11.3 percent.
