Directorate-General for Equal Treatment
On 1 January 2021, the Equal Treatment Authority was merged into the Office of the Commissioner for Fundamental Rights, and from that date it operates as the Directorate-General for Equal Treatment within the Commissioner’s Office.
The requirement of equal treatment is breached when a person or group is disadvantaged because of a perceived or real protected characteristic. The protected characteristics include, among others, gender, colour, nationality, disability, religious belief, political opinion or gender identity.
The requirement of equal treatment must be respected by the Hungarian state, local governments, public authorities, law enforcement agencies, public institutions, health care providers and child protection institutions. The requirement of equal treatment must also be observed in the activities of anyone providing a service or distributing goods, and by all employers in their employment.
If these organisations breach the requirement of equal treatment, they can be subject to official proceedings by the Commissioner for Fundamental Rights. More information on the procedure can be found at the following link: https://www.ajbh.hu/ebff-hogyan-zajlik-az-eljaras
The complaint to initiate the procedure may be submitted by post, via the e-Paper service through electronic administration or in person. It is important to indicate in the complaint that the petitioner is requesting the procedure of the Directorate-General for Equal Treatment.
