Who are we?
The Internet Hotline is an online information and assistance service operated by the National Media and Infocommunications Authority since 2011 as a public interest service, working to make the internet a safer place. Online content can be reported in 8 reporting categories if the reporting person suspects that it is illegal or harmful to the development of minors. Over the past nearly 14 years, we have handled more than 19,000 reports.
Basic information on the Internet Hotline’s procedure
Internet Hotline receives reports about online content that the reporting person suspects it may be illegal or harmful to children. Hotline analysts are professionally trained to examine the content available on the reported link(s) and take the necessary action. This may include contacting the relevant social media platform directly, or if a commitment of a crime is suspected, Internet Hotline will contact its main cooperating partner, the Hungarian law enforcement agency, called the National Bureau of Investigation of the Rapid Response and Special Police Service.
If the reporting person has provided their email contact details, Internet Hotline will inform them on the investigation and the action(s) taken within a maximum of 5 working days.
The Hotline’s procedure is fast, efficient and transparent, and our analysts are committed to protecting human rights, children's rights, and promoting the best interests of children.
How can we help?
The aim of Internet Hotline’s work is to make the internet a safer place for children and adults also. To this end, they receive and analyse the reports and the content(s) reported in it. In addition to this essential task, they deliver awareness-raising and educational workshops and lectures for professionals, parents, university students and also children.
Where and how to report?
Users can contact us (https://english.nmhh.hu/internethotline/) via the webform available on the website (https://ekapu.nmhh.hu/ugyLetrehozas/DO643120) or via e-mail (internethotline@internethotline.hu). When submitting a report by using the form, the reporting person does not have to provide their name and contact details and can submit their report anonymously. In this case, the Internet Hotline staff will investigate the content of the report, but are unable to respond to the reporting person.
If there is a suspicion that a crime has been committed, it is suggested to report it by providing contact details. This will enable analysts to ask questions if necessary and inform the reporting person about the actions taken.
