Despicable Me 3 dominated the box office

Statistics from the National Media and Infocommunications Authority (NMHH) shows that animated film Despicable Me 3 topped ticket sales in Q3 2017. Gross ticket revenue for this quarter exceeded that of the previous quarter by HUF 500 million. In art cinemas, the story of the reformed villain was also Number One, followed by three Hungarian features, namely Pappa Pia, Kincsem – Bet on Revenge and On Body and Soul (Testről és lélekről).

According to the NMHH Film Office’s aggregate, a total of 3.8 million cinemagoers generated a gross revenue of HUF 5.2 billion in ticket sales in Q3 2017, exceeding both the 3.4 million-strong audience and HUF 4.7 billion ticket revenue in the previous quarter. The most-watched film was Despicable Me 3 with a total audience of 510,000, 170,000 more than the previous quarter’s box-office topper, The Fate of the Furious, in Q2. The animated feature was followed by Baywatch with a total audience of 286,000, and the horror film It with 257,000 viewers. The most-watched Hungarian film, romantic/musical comedy Pappa Pia, missed the top three, attracting 199,000 cinemagoers. The previous quarter’s fourth most-watched film was also a Hungarian feature, Kincsem – Bet on Revenge, with an audience of 229,000. Moreover, the Top 10 features 7 films from the US, with British/French Dunkirk and French Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets taking 6th and 7th place, respectively.

Statistics include a list prepared by the NMHH specifically for art cinemas. Audience numbers in these cinemas saw a year-on-year increase from 226,000 in Q3 2016 to 268,000 in the same period in 2017. Revenue from ticket sales grew to HUF 283 million, a HUF 47 million increase compared to the previous year. In art cinemas, the most tickets were also sold to Despicable Me 3, a total of 21,000. It was followed by Pappa Pia (17,574), Kincsem – Bet on Revenge (11,530) and On Body and Soul (10,209).
