President of the National Media and Infocommunications Authority Monika Karas inaugurated today a cutting-edge media laboratory at Eötvös Loránd University.

The equipment setup was fully financed by the Authority. As the fourth addition to the list of New Media Culture Creative Labs — each operating at a different university —, the new facility will be providing world-class IT tools and software, thus raising the standards of classroom teaching and allowing students to grow their potential.

Launched in 2012, the NMHH’s programme is aimed at setting up media laboratories at institutions of higher education nationwide, featuring state-of-the-art hardware and software. Besides an enhanced learning experience, students working on their papers or theses will also have access to tools used by professionals at leading media studios worldwide.

Computers at the lab come with a host of software pre-installed for graphic design, video editing, web development and desktop publishing, enabling users to tackle even the most complex creative and post-processing tasks with ease. Thanks to their skills acquired at the lab, students will be able to perform under even the most difficult challenges, whether in traditional or new media, online editorial offices, radio or television production, or creative design.

“These tools meet not only the challenges of today but also those of tomorrow ...or as we tend to say: realising our dreams is no longer limited by technology. I consider the NMHH a modern, 21st century authority and thus believe that our task is to foster creativity and development. After all, that is what can make the digital world a richer place”, President Karas noted at the inauguration.

Tamás Dezső, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, said at the opening ceremony that the lab will enable the University to put a stronger focus on practical training, which is just as important as classroom learning that has a long history of excellence at ELTE. He then thanked the NMHH for letting his colleagues work with such advanced technology and assured President Karas that they could not have found a better place for the lab, and these high-end machines will be utilised at maximum efficiency.

Created with a total budget of HUF 12 million, the lab immediately became popular on campus, and classes are already scheduled for tomorrow.
