Development of the number of fixed internet subscriptions by access type (thousands) between 31 December 2006 and 31 December 2015

By the end of 2015, the number of fixed internet subscriptions exceeded 2.7 million. The number of subscriptions continues to rise, albeit at a slower pace: a constant 6% growth was registered in recent years. Fixed broadband internet penetration of households improved from 25% in 2006 to 65% in 2015.

When looking at different platforms, it is established that the number of connections using xDSL14 technology slightly declined from its peak in 2010/11, but the last two years saw a modest increase. The number of connections through cable (CATV15) and fibre networks continues to grow in parallel to the development of such networks. Thanks to developments primarily by Digi Kft. and, to a lesser extent, Magyar Telekom Nyrt., the number of subscriptions for fibre internet access services was close to 450,000 by the end of 2015. With regard to opportunities for further growth in the market for fixed broadband internet access services, it is important to note that the key to continued growth of internet use in Hungary now lies with the user (demand) side. Growth is no longer limited primarily by the availability of operators so programmes aimed at consumer activity, interest and awareness-raising are becoming ever more important when it comes to boosting internet use.
