Last Friday students and instructors of the University of Debrecen took possession of a New Media Culture Creative Lab, the third in the country and the sixth in Hungary, sponsored by the National Media and Infocommunications Authority. Similar to the students at three institutions of higher education in Budapest and two other in the country (ELTE, MOME, University of Pécs, University of Szeged and Pázmány Péter Catholic University), from now on each year thousands of young people in Debrecen will be able to use the high-tech media laboratory to make their professional dreams come true. The cost of the laboratory equipment was fully financed by NMHH.

At the opening ceremony, Monika Karas, President of Hungary’s National Media and Infocommunications Authority emphasized that NMHH considers its responsibility to contribute to creating a technical environment encouraging creativity for the media professionals of the future. Ms. Karas pointed out the importance of offering the best possible training with modern and competitive equipment to communications and media major students in Debrecen because they will be the professionals who will set the course for the development of the media and infocommunication sector in the coming decades.

Zoltán Szilvássy, Rector of the University of Debrecen thanked NMHH for the opportunity granted to its staff and students to work with the latest technology. He promised that the university would use this endowment to the best of its abilities and, in addition to supporting university education, expand the university’s intellectual influence.

Featuring cutting edge technology worth HUF 12 million, the lab opened its doors to students immediately after the opening ceremony. NMHH has provided three MacPro and three iMac 27-inch computers, three Apple Thunderbolt displays and six Adobe CS6 Master Collection creative software package and also covered all costs related to the implementation and furnishing of the facility.

Students of communications and media science pursuing their bachelor and master degrees will profit the most from the opportunities offered by NMHH’s creative media workshop. In addition to the 45 bachelor and the 20–30 master graduates in this major each year, the laboratory will support the development of approximately 900 students’ communications know-how and practical training within the context of 60 different courses from other fields and faculties such as sales and marketing, tourism and hospitality, business management, health management, agricultural engineering and childhood education.

Launched in 2012, the NMHH’s programme is aimed at setting up media laboratories at institutions of higher education nationwide, featuring state-of-the-art hardware and software. Besides an enhanced learning experience, students working on their papers or theses will also have access to tools used by professionals at leading media studios worldwide. Computers at the lab come with a host of software pre-installed for graphic design, video editing, web development and desktop publishing, enabling users to tackle even the most complex creative and post-processing tasks with ease. Thanks to their skills acquired at the lab, students will be able to perform under even the most difficult challenges, whether in traditional or new media, online editorial offices, radio or television production, or creative design.
