Careful preparations continue for a new tender for frequency licences, one that is expected to promote new investments in spectrum usage

The National Media and Infocommunications Authority has resumed negotiations with industry stakeholders regarding a draft tender for the utilisation of currently unused spectrum in the 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2600 MHz and 26 GHz bands.

In their comments and suggestions received so far, service providers have pointed out that developing Hungary’s digital economy — while also levelling the playing field for subscribers seeking to access the most advanced broadband services at competitive rates — is a priority goal for regulators and market players alike.

Allocating spectrum licences for currently unused frequency bands by way of a tender is expected to heighten competition, accelerate the implementation of broadband coverage and the proliferation of state-of-the-art wireless services, as well as facilitate the emergence of competitive consumer prices.

The Office of the NMHH has finished processing and evaluating the suggestions received from service providers regarding the draft tender that was announced in late November last year. For purposes of ensuring a successful tender, NMHH officials will over the coming period incorporate comments of merit into the regulatory environment, update the tender documentation as appropriate, and supplement the announcement with suggestions promoting the development of a digital economy.

Stakeholder negotiations concerning the draft tender announcement are scheduled, of which service providers will be notified in due course.
