Budapest for the Development of the European Digital Economy

International strategic dialogue between financial, telecommunications and legal regulatory experts

Published: 2 December 2013

Organised by the National Media and Infocommunications Authority (NMHH), an international conference will be held on 4 December in Budapest with the participation of bankers responsible for investments in the region, financial consultants and analysts, telecoms regulators and EU officials, in order to discuss possible ways of improving the competitiveness of the European telecommunications sector.

The telecoms meeting arranged for 4 December in Hungary may yield unprecedented results considering that it seldom happens that authority leaders, EU experts, market players and investors join forces to analyse the development trends in the telecommunications sector primarily from an economic and investment point of view. Speakers at the event are internationally acclaimed experts committed to the development of the sector. The goal of the conference is to explore together the critical points of telecommunications investments and identify the factors required for successful initiatives, as each Member State has a vested interest in establishing optimal conditions for the digital economy.

Attendees will discuss the regulatory possibilities of the telecommunications sector and gain information about the tools the European Union intends to provide in order to facilitate development. Representatives of Member States are invited to offer their comments in respect of the topics covered. Besides the assessment of the European Commission’s proposal on the establishment of a single European telecommunications market, the position of the Body of European Regulators for Electronic Communications (BEREC) will be also revealed.

The opening address will be delivered by Dr. Monika Karas, President of the National Media and Infocommunications Authority. The conference is expected to host around two hundred attendees. Speakers include Dr. Leonidas Kanellos, BEREC Chair 2013, Robert Madelin, Director General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology of the European Commission and Harald Gruber, Head of the Digital Economy and Education Division at the Projects Directorate of the European Investment Bank. Following the conference, leaders of European regulatory authorities attend the 4th plenary session of BEREC in 2013, also arranged by the NMHH and scheduled for 5-6 December in Budapest.
